I think it's definitely possible. You sound like you have a great friendship together and there is a lot of mutual respect. You care for each other, there's a strong physical attraction there, and you have known him for 5 years. I wouldn't say it's just infatuation, though I can't give you any solid answers because I don't know the two of you, but usually I consider 'infatuation' to be really lustful or something you may feel toward a person you may not truly know too well.
