Can my orthodonist bill the invisalign as metal braces?

I went in for a consultation for invisalign and wanted to start. However, my dental insurance will only pay for metal braces. The orthodontist told me that they can bill it to the insurance company as metal braces so that I get the benefit. This didn't seem right to me...Do orthodontists do this regularly?
