Why are a majority of homes in South Florida single story?

I've noticed that a vast majority of detached homes in South Florida are one story. Why is this? Why are the suburbs not predominantly comprised of two-story homes, much like the suburbs of cities in the northeast (i.e. New York, Boston, etc.)?
